About Us

Our aims

The aims of the Association are set out in its Constitution, signed on Tuesday, 17th September, 2024 in the Cosin’s Library on Palace Green by our first joint Presidents, Lady Black of Derwent and Lord Hughes of Ombersley, both Durham alumni, and both former UK Supreme Court judges, as well as by Professor Volker Roeben, Dean of the Law School. The Constitution was also signed earlier in the day at the Law School by the Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Karen O'Brien.

 Our aims include:

  • to advance the Law School by fostering networking between the Law School and its students and Durham University alumni who have made their careers in the field of Law,
  • to encourage the involvement of the judiciary and practitioners in legal education and research at the Law School,
  • to facilitate mentoring arrangements and practical legal experience for Durham students interested in a career in the Law,
  • to provide networking opportunities for members of the Association, and
  • to provide assistance, awards and scholarships to students or Durham graduates pursuing a career in Law or legal research and otherwise to raise funds to further the purposes of the Association.

The Constitution provides that the Association may not carry on any Political Activity (as defined in the Constitution) and that the Association is required, in the conduct of its activities, to adopt a position of strict political neutrality.
