Fellowships

We welcome expressions of interest to apply for Fellowships hosted by Durham University and supported by external funding agencies and organisations. As a first step it is a good idea to get in touch with a member of the department who can act as your sponsor and assist you as you prepare your application.

You can find details of some of the common Fellowships below, including timelines for submitting expressions of interest. If the Fellowship you are interested in applying for is not listed or you do not have a departmental contact, please get in touch with [email protected]. We particularly encourage applications from women and black and ethnic minority candidates, who are underrepresented in academic positions in the university.

EPSRC Open and Open Plus Fellowships support talented and ambitious researchers to deliver research excellence and develop a modern working culture. The fellowships have are designed with the flexibility to fit the applicants research needs and career ambitions. Requests for support are considered on a rolling basis. The STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship is a prestigious five-year fellowship, aimed at experienced early career researchers who do not have an academic position and are looking to establish a strong and independent research programme in solar and planetary science, particle physics and cosmology. STFC operates a quota system: the department can support three applications to STFC. There is an internal selection process to identify the applicants we support. To express interest in being considered, please send a CV including a publication list and a brief research statement to Simon Ross at [email protected]. Expressions of interest received by the end of June will receive full consideration.

UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships aim to develop the next wave of world-class research and innovation leaders in academia and business. You can apply for funding over 4 years, both to tackle ambitious and challenging research and innovation and to develop your career. Please check the UKRI website for the latest application deadlines. There is an internal selection process at both the Department and University levels. In order to be considered, please contact [email protected] well in advance, at least four months, of the UKRI deadline.

The Royal Society University Research Fellowship is for outstanding scientists who are in the early stages of their research career with the goal of building an independent research career pursuing cutting-edge scientific research. The fellowships are competitive and the Department runs an internal selection process to identify the applicants we support. EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships are prestigious early career fellowships aimed at exceptional, ambitious and talented researchers who wish to develop, expand or establish a programme of research alongside personal and professional development. Requests for support are considered on a rolling basis.
