Arabic Studies

Our Department of Arabic can boast an international reputation in the field of Arabic and Middle Eastern studies

Chinese Studies

Durham has a long history of teaching East Asian languages: our first lecturer in Chinese was appointed in 1952

Yangshuo County, Guilin City, Guangxi Province, China.

French Studies

Our teaching and research benefits from a wide range of staff expertise across French and Francophone cultures from the Middle Ages to the present day

German Studies

Our colleagues in German Studies cover a rich selection of challenging and rewarding areas of German language and culture

Hispanic Studies

Our colleagues in Hispanic Studies include internationally recognised experts in literature, film, and cultural studies from the Middle Ages to the present day

Italian Studies

Italian at Durham is one of the top Italian units in the UK, regularly appearing in the top five in major national league tables

Japanese Studies

Japanese language, literature and related subjects have been studied at Durham University for well over half a century

In addition to our language courses, our research in Russian Studies spans the period from the seventeenth century to the present
