Magnetometry at Durham

Durham University is equipped with a Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System 3 (MPMS3). This instrument enables highly sensitive magnetic measurements under variable conditions. The instrument is based on detection via a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and a 7 T superconducting magnet, with a sample temperature range of 2 K to 400 K. The system uses an Evercool refrigeration system, which liquefies helium, minimising the usage of this resource.

Capabilities:

  • a vibrating sample magnetometer measurement system to achieve <1x10^-8 emu sensitivity necessary for time-efficient measurements on low-moment systems;
  • AC susceptibility option for dynamic measurements;
  • sample rotation option for systematic measurements on single crystals and films;
  • ultra-low field conditions: ± 0.05 G with a 7 T magnet.
